AN “iconic venue” in South Somerset, has announced it will no longer operate as a public hotel and has shut down its restaurant permanently.
Haselbury Mill, a popular hotel destination, wedding venue and dining location near Crewkerne has ceased shut down its hotel and restaurant from Friday, May 2.
The site will instead be transitioning to operating solely as a private wedding and events venue.
Despite this, the Sunday Carvery’s are to continue as normal for the time being.
In a post on social media, the team at Haselbury Mill said: “From May 1, Haselbury Mill will no longer operate as a public restaurant and hotel, as we transition to focus exclusively on being a wedding and events venue.
“We’re incredibly grateful for your continued support over the years. But don’t worry – our beloved Sunday Carvery isn’t going anywhere and will continue as usual.
“Here’s to the next chapter.”
This comes after the Grade II buildings and the Tithe Barn, set within 13 acres of grounds, featuring a meandering river and lake, were sold at an undisclosed price by Christie & Co in December, 2024.

Many have responded to the post sharing their devastation at the news, including the team at The Crewkerne Gazette (a local parody publication).
They said: “For decades, Haselbury Mill has been more than just a picturesque spot – it’s been the beating heart of local celebrations, Sunday lunches, and community gatherings. With its idyllic grounds, historic buildings, and homely charm, the Mill has held a special place in the hearts of many in Crewkerne, Haselbury Plucknett and surrounding villages.
“The loss of Haselbury Mill in its former glory will be felt deeply – especially by those who remember its heyday”.
In response, a resident said: “That’s a real shame - was so lovely having such a beautiful place to eat on our doorstep.”
Another added: “This is incredibly sad, it was such an amazing, relaxed place for drinks, food. Minnie and team were fantastic.”
With the focus of Haselbury Mill now being on their next chapter, many residents remain apprehensive about the changes ahead, whilst others are feeling optimistic about the venue having a fresh start.
