A JURY has been sworn in for the trial of a man from Axminster accused of killing his one-month-old son in Chard.

Tony Bartlett, 39, denies charges of murder and manslaughter relating to the death of baby Atticus Bartlett.

Atticus was four weeks old when he was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

He died on 23 July 2022.

On Thursday, a jury of six men and six women was sworn in to try the case at Bristol Crown Court.

Mr Justice Cavanagh told the jury that the trial would be opened by the prosecution on Friday.

The judge said: "The case involves the death of a four-week-old baby.

"The prosecution allege that the defendant was involved in the murder of the baby.

"He denies that allegation.

"It is a sensitive case, and some of the evidence may be distressing."

The judge told jurors that it was not possible to give an exact time estimate for the case, but it is believed it will last for up to five weeks.

Charles Row KC and Sarah Jenkins are appearing for the prosecution.

Bartlett is represented by Nigel Power KC and Ian Morrell.

Avon and Somerset Police previously said officers were called by paramedics to an address in Chard, Somerset, at about 11.30pm on 16 July 2022.

The baby was taken to hospital in a critical condition and died on 23 July.

Bartlett, of Axminster, Devon, denies the two charges against him and the trial continues.
