CHARD Town Council have backed plans to install five lighting and CCTV columns in a car park in a large industrial estate to help manage and prevent crime in the area.

In a full town council meeting held on Monday, November 24 at 7pm, the authority reached a unanimous decision to support an application for lighting and CCTV columns to be installed on land adjacent to Numatic Building 34, in Milfield Road.

Proposed by councillor Tim Eggins and seconded by Councillor Claire Richter, the committee supported the application, with additional comments being there would be “no interference from the public as this was a non-residential area. Additionally, CCTV cameras would be a welcome aid in support of managing crime.”

The land in question, which provides car parking spaces for employees and visitors, is located south of the A30 (Crewkerne Road) and Tapstone Road (currently comprising a mixture of commercial and retail units) and has recently changed possession from Brecknell Willis to Numatic.

Tapstone Road commercial and retail units are occupied predominantly by Lidl (north-west) and Tesco (north), with an array of new units yet to be let (north-eastern boundary of the application site).

The plan said the proposed lighting and CCTV columns measure six metres high and are “required for security and safety purposes”.

The lighting would be in the form of photocells, operating during times of darkness to help the CCTV camera’s visibility and minimise any hazards to drivers or pedestrians within the site.

It said: “The proposed lighting and CCTV columns are in keeping with the existing lighting on the site and the immediate area surrounding area and would not cause a significant adverse impact on the landscape setting, the character of the area and residential amenity,

“It is considered that the installation of additional lighting and CCTV columns to serve a well-established business, for security and safety purposes, is acceptable, in principle.”
