A COUNCILLOR is working with Chard businesses to relaunch the town’s chamber of commerce.

Cllr Connor Payne said a “new era begins for Chard businesses” after residents discussed the benefits of having a chamber of commerce at a public participation event.

The chamber would return nearly 20 years after the previous one was dissolved, he also added.

Cllr Payne said: “After a recent Public Participation event carried out by Chard Town Council, the benefits of a new chamber of commerce were discussed.

“After floating the idea with some local business owners, it appears the idea is more in demand than anticipated.

“After nearly 20 years since the previous chamber was dissolved, Chard Businesses are turning to each other to find solutions because of present and potential challenges facing the independent sector.

“The aim is simple: give local businesses a collective voice on local issues, stimulate public awareness for better use of independent businesses, and promote Chard as a hub for tourism and trade through independent commerce.

Chard & Ilminster News:

“Chard is a historical market town. That’s not good enough. Chard needs to claim back its Market Town status, not as historic, but contemporary.

“That starts by bringing businesses together and focussing on a common goal.

“Our hard-working business owners are the backbone of our community; without them, Chard would be a different picture.

“So, we need to incorporate their ideas into the future of our community.

“This is a new era for chard business. The first meeting is on Wednesday, February 7, in the Chard Guildhall Auditorium at 6pm.

“Any business registered to a TA20 address is welcome to attend and a letter of invitation will be sent to most businesses within the coming days.”
