A PLANNING application for the conversion of a listed building into flats in Chard town centre has been approved this week.

The proposal asked for the “restoration and alteration of existing building to provide a retail unit and seven flats” on Fore Street.

A statement from a planning document said: “17 Fore Street comprises a ground floor commercial unit with two upper floors and is located within the commercial centre of Chard.

“The upper floors have previously been used for 15 bedsits although this use was unauthorised.

“This listed building application seeks retrospective consent to retain the internal works undertaken to provide seven flats and external restoration works.”

On the same document, it is also reported that: “This is a project that has been implemented with grant support from Historic England as part of the Chard Heritage Action Zone.

“Whilst it is retrospective, the works have saved an 'at risk' building and the historic significance of the interior has been preserved.

“Given this, it is considered that the development has had a positive impact upon all identified heritage assets.

“It is considered that there has been no demonstrable harm caused to the historic character of the building.

“Therefore, it is considered that the development is in accordance with Section 16 of the Listed Building and Conservation Areas Act, policy EQ3 of the South Somerset Local Plan, and Chapter 16 of the NPPF.”
