A CHARD and Ilminster reader sent us some photos of The Halfway Club after reading an article about the history of Chard Carnival.
He sent us photos of The Halfway Club, so called because based between Chard and Ilminster, as he noticed a member of the Chard Carnival Committee was working on a photographic history of the event to create an archive for future generations.
Our reader said: “Further to a recent article concerning the history of Chard Carnival we came across the enclosed mini archive concerning the Crossman family et al / Hornsbury Mill (our home for 17 years).
“ ‘The Halfway Club’, so named because it was halfway between Chard and Ilminster.
“Practice nights were held at Hornsbury Mill with the trailers constructed on a nearby farm.”
These photos are believed to be from 1977/78, although not every single one has a date on it, and were taken by D.J. Wheadon, according to stamps that can be seen on the back of some of the images.
