FIREFIGHTERS were called to the scene of a property fire at Winsham, near Chard, in the early hours of this morning.

Crews from Axminster, Yeovil, Chard, Crewkerne and Ilminster were sent to the property at around 5.10am today (November 27).

An eyewitness who works nearby said the building was “fully ablaze” and some of its roof tiles were falling down by the time the fire service arrived.

Daniel Dicker saw the fire at around 4.50am as he left Lubborn Creamery, where is a lead technician and trained fire warden.

He ran into a nearby hotel to raise the alarm and asked a member of staff to contact the emergency services.

He said: “I had just finished work at Lubborn Creamery when I spotted the fire and originally believed it was part of the Cricket St Thomas (hotel) buildings.

“I then realised it was a building behind, so I ran into the main reception and asked them to call the fire brigade and police.”

A spokesperson for the Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service said: “Fire control received a 999 call reporting a property on fire.

“Four fire engines were immediately sent.

“On arrival, crews have confirmed that this property was fully involved in fire and at currently at work trying to extinguish the fire using main jets and hose reel jets.”

A later update said: “The fire service are still in attendance with four fire engines. This is a two-storey domestic property, fully involved in fire.

“Crews are currently using five main jets to try and extinguish the fire.

“Crews are fighting the fire externally due to the unsafe stability of the property.”

The Chard and Ilminster News has contacted the fire service and police for further updates.
