EAGLE-EYED Chard residents say they have spotted something slightly different about a monument in the town centre since it was reinstalled.

A group of residents said the Stringfellow’s Aeroplane Monument on Fore Street appeared to have been put back the wrong way, after it was briefly removed to allow refurbishment work to be carried out in the area, as part of a project to improve the town centre.

Chard & Ilminster News:

Residents took to social media to air their concerns with some pointing out that the Stringfellow now faces the road and its plaque is on ‘the other end’ while another resident said that, due to the height of the sculpture, someone ‘is going to hit their head on the wing’.

South Somerset District Council, which was responsible for the installation of the sculpture, said the sculpture is facing the same direction, however the plaque has indeed been moved.

A spokesman said: “The Stringfellow Sculpture is facing the same direction as before it was removed. The plaque has been moved to another side of the sculpture to allow for increased visibility.”
