PUPILS at Greenfylde First School in Ilminster were treated to a more explosive school day than usual last week when they had a visit from Devon-based science educators Wonderstruck.

As British Science Week ended, the children were given a whistle-stop tour of Newton’s third law of motion.

The school hall echoed the sounds of explosions, compressed air rockets, air cannons, and laughter as Peter Wright from Wonderstruck wowed the staff and children with some serious science.

Science co-ordinator, Ed Swift said: “This has been a brilliant day – the scientific thinking and experimentation from all the children has been amazing to see, and the show was spectacular! It was great to see the children so excited about science and hear their discussions still going on as they left the school.”

With humour, gunpowder, and even a bed of nails, the children learnt about pressure, forces, and why they should be very careful around flammable materials.

Later in the day, pupils and staff worked together to make compressed air rockets that were launched from the school playground, with the winning rocket flying for nearly 250 feet.

In the afternoon, it was time for the children in Years 3 and 4 to experiment, test, and race their own fan-powered cars.

The younger children got in on the action too, testing out the effects of static electricity on their hair and on balloons.

Based in Devon, Wonderstruck has been bringing science to life for children across the UK since 2004.

Its mission is to bring learning to life and inspire the next generation of curious scientists. More information can be found at https://www.wonderstruck.co.uk/
