DEMENTIA sufferers in the Chard, Ilminster and Crewkerne area are set to benefit from a pioneering scheme launching this month.

The Alzheimer’s Society in Somerset is launching a Dementia Adviser Service, with four advisers supported by trained volunteers in locations such as GP surgeries and Active Learning Centres.

Each adviser will be the first point of contact for people with dementia to express their concerns and learn about practical ways to manage their condition.

Claire Nicholls, dementia adviser with the Alzheimer’s Society, said: “When people are diagnosed with dementia they often feel they don’t have enough information.

“They can be overwhelmed with information and left to understand this alone.

“We want to stop this happening by offering people in Somerset information that is specifically tailored for them in a format they prefer.”

The pilot scheme is being run in partnership Somerset County Council and NHS Somerset and has been funded by £200,000 grant from the government.

Cllr Christine Lawrence, cabinet member for community, said: “It’s great news Somerset has been chosen to pilot this worthwhile scheme.

“People with dementia and their carers are under huge strain and the support from dementia advisers will be crucial in making sure they get the help and support they need.”

A series of sessions will be running across the county to provide information about the service, starting on Wednesday at the Guildhall in Chard between 10.30am and 12.30pm.
