After more than 40 years working in Ilminster, I would like to express my sincere thanks to clients, colleagues, and professional contacts for their trust, kindness, and support throughout my career, writes Sally Lowe.
Beginning legal practice in the 1980s was a very different experience from today.
Ilminster still had its Magistrates’ Court and three banks.
Most legal work was paper-based, communication was slower, and personal relationships between solicitor and client were central to every matter.
Over the decades, I have witnessed enormous change, from computerised systems, mobile phones, and email, to digitalised court procedures as well as the increasing pace and complexity of everyday life and social media.
Despite these changes, one constant has remained: the importance of trust, integrity, and serving others with care and professionalism.
It has been a privilege to work within such a close-knit community, supporting individuals and families through important moments across generations.
Ilminster continues to retain a strong sense of local identity, with its independent shops, businesses, and traditional market contributing greatly to the character and spirit of the town.
I greatly value opportunities to contribute beyond my professional role through involvement with local charities, churches, schools, and community organisations.
In accordance with contractual obligations, I will not be practising for a short time, but am looking forward to continuing my involvement with charitable and community organisations with which I am proud to be associated.
Ilminster’s community spirit, reflected in events such as the Midsummer Experience and the Christmas lights, remains something I deeply value.
I am therefore pleased to support the Ilminster Chamber of Commerce’s scarecrow competition entry, ‘Surfin’ Sal’, inspired by this year’s theme, ‘Keeping Active’.
Friends who know me as a dedicated fan of David Essex will not be surprised that I shall also be enjoying his forthcoming tour, appropriately entitled ‘Thanks for the Memories’.
Later this year, I will be supporting Cancer Research UK by taking part in their Night Shine 10k walk in Bristol, helping raise funds for the charity’s important work supporting research and treatment, which you can support at fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/sallys-giving-page-3742.
I will be taking part in the challenge as a meaningful way to say thank you to many clients, colleagues, and friends.
I remain very aware of the importance of continued cancer research.
This is because I have seen the impact cancer has had on many individuals and families over the years, including my own.
