A generous legacy is helping improve play and learning in the heart of a community in South Somerset.
Tatworth Primary School is one of several village organisations to benefit from the legacy fund of the late Stonham twin brothers, who were well-known for their dedication to the village and their ownership of Herbert’s General Store.
The brothers’ gift enabled the school to finally realise its long-planned outdoor play trail, which has transformed play and learning opportunities for pupils.
Tracey Hart, headteacher at Tatworth Primary School, said: "After many years of planning and additional fundraising for the play trail, we are delighted that it is now in place.
"The play trail is much loved by all of the children and provides enhanced learning and play opportunities for everyone."
Pupils were closely involved in the project, with the school council helping to select the equipment.
Ms Hart said: "This included choosing the all-year-round wetpour flooring, which means the play trail can be used even during the colder months.
"The children selected the ocean-coloured design, which is loved by all.
"We have seven fabulous pieces of equipment, including the largest Clamber Stack climbing frame we could fit in, plus a large net swing."
The late Stonham brothers ran Herbert’s General Store from 1975 through to the 1990s, serving as a cornerstone of daily life in Tatworth.
Their legacy fund also supported the Memorial Hall and Village Playing Field, reflecting their lifelong commitment to the community.
Residents remember the brothers as hardworking, community-minded individuals whose generosity continues to shape village life.
Their lasting gift is a reminder of the power of giving back, providing new opportunities for generations to come.
It stands as an example of how personal kindness can continue to shape and strengthen a village for many years to come.
