Review of Betty's, a new independent business in Ilminster

Immediately upon entering the premises, I was greeted with bright smiles and friendly service from owner Clare White and her friend of 10 years, Alice, who also works in the space.

I was impressed by the selection of baked goods on offer and the options for sandwiches, wraps, salads and beverages.

I was even more impressed, however, when I discovered the range of gluten-free options, how Clare bakes the vast majority of the goods on offer from scratch, and how the sandwich fillings are all freshly prepared.

Natually, having a sister with Coeliac Disease, I had to try at least one gluten-free option, and since I was in the mood for something sweet, I opted to try the brownie, millionaire's shortbread and popular cherry bakewell cake (gluten-free).

Honestly, as soon as I tried a bite of each, I could instantly tell they were homemade.

Often, with millionaire's shortbread, when you get them from chains, they are quite crumbly, and you can usually tell they have been left sitting on the counter for a while, but this was not the case with Betty's.

The caramel was absolutely delicious, and I loved the generous amount provided in between the layers. The shortbread was also really soft and flavourful, and it all paired perfectly with the chocolate.

The brownie was my favourite. I much prefer fudgy brownies to ones with a cake-like consistency, and this one did not disappoint. It was so moist, rich and flavourful, I couldn't put it down.

Lastly, but not least, was the cherry bakewell cake. I gave this one to my sister to review, but still had a bite of it and can say it was also scrumptious.

I loved the subtle hints of almond combined with the cherry flavour and icing.

Sometimes gluten-free food can be really dry and fall apart in your hands, but this held its own and was surprisingly moist and light. Naturally, my sister Betsy was delighted.

She said: "It's really lovely, and moist, and I would never be able to tell it was gluten-free.

"I think it's wonderful that Betty's offers gluten-free options, as it is so hard to find sometimes."

Overall, I would highly recommend this to anyone who lives in or visits Ilminster as a lovely place with a great atmosphere, to grab a bite or a drink.
