Recently, I visited two soft play centres in our area, as well as a baby sensory class, and I was reminded just how important play is in the early years of a child’s life, writes Adam Dance MP.
It was fantastic to see these spaces in action.
Children were learning, exploring and building confidence, all while having fun.
Whether it was climbing, balancing, or simply interacting with others, every activity was helping to support their development.
At the baby sensory class, I saw how even very young children benefit from play.
Through simple activities like music, movement and touch, babies begin to develop communication skills and an understanding of the world around them.
Play is often underestimated, but it is a crucial part of childhood.
It helps children develop physically, socially and emotionally, and lays the foundations for learning later in life.
These experiences also provide an important opportunity for parents and carers to connect with others.
Building those networks can make a real difference, particularly in the early years.

However, I also heard about the challenges facing both families and the businesses providing these services.
Rising costs, including wages and overheads, are putting pressure on small, family-run venues.
At the same time, many parents are having to make difficult choices about what they can afford.
We need to make sure that children’s development is not something that becomes a luxury.
The Liberal Democrats believe that every child should have the best possible start in life.
That means properly supporting early years services, investing in childcare, and making sure families can access the opportunities their children need to thrive.
It also means recognising the role that local businesses and community providers play in supporting young families.
The soft play centres and classes I visited are doing a brilliant job.
They are creating safe, welcoming environments where children can grow and families can feel supported.
I want to see these kinds of services continue to flourish.
I will keep working to support local providers and to push for the investment needed to give every child in our community the best start in life.
