PUPILS at Herne View Church of England Primary School in Ilminster celebrated World Book Day ‘in style’ as staff and students alike arrived at school dressed as their favourite book characters.
The classrooms were filled with a range of costumes inspired by well-loved stories, ranging from classic fairy-tale characters to modern literary heroes.
The day was described by staff as a ‘joyful celebration of storytelling and the imagination’, with pupils sharing their favourite books and talking about the characters and adventures that inspire their love of reading.
To encourage reading beyond the classroom, the school also organised a book swap, giving pupils the opportunity to bring in a pre-loved book from home and exchange it for a different one to enjoy.
A spokesperson for the school said the initiative ‘helped children discover new stories while promoting the value of sharing books within the school community.’
Children also had the opportunity to enter a competition to redesign their favourite book covers, and this inspired some ‘very creative interpretations’.
World Book Day vouchers were also given out to children so they could choose one of this year’s free books to help continue their journey and love of reading.
Staff at Herne View said the event was a ‘fantastic way to celebrate reading together’ and highlighted the school’s commitment to nurturing a lifelong love of books in every child.

When asked how they felt the day went, many pupils came forward saying how much fun they had.
Rosie said: “I love World Book Day because you get to dress up as your favourite character and I love reading so much”
Bradley said: “I got to learn about new books and different styles of books, also it gave me lots of creative ideas"
Mirium said: “I loved that you could make your own costume, and I enjoyed seeing what everyone had dressed up as”
Clara said: “I loved hearing about new books and sharing my favourite with my friends”
Millie said: “I dressed up as Emily Pankhurst because I was inspired by her courage”
Alex said: “I like World Book Day because reading relaxes your mind”
Another pupil said: “I have always enjoyed WBD at school. I am sad it’s my last year. I really like dressing up with my friends; furthermore, the book swap gives the opportunity for children in the school to read other books that they may not naturally read.”
