STAFF and pupils at Manor Court Community Primary School enjoyed a 'fantastic celebration’ of World Book Day, embracing the national theme of reading for fun.
Children arrived at school dressed as their favourite book characters, while others came in cosy pyjamas ready to enjoy a day that involved many reading activities.
The celebration began with an assembly led by assistant headteacher Mrs Geri Terry, who spoke to pupils about how reading can become a lifelong hobby and then retold the story of The Wizard of Oz.
Throughout the day, pupils took part in a variety of activities, designed to encourage a love of books, including a reading trail around the school, sharing stories with a different class and creating their own potato book character to take home.
The school has since expressed its gratitude to Branston Ltd, based in Seavington St Michael, near Ilminster, for donating all of the potatoes used in the activity.
Each pupil also received a World Book Day token, which could be exchanged for a free book at participating retailers.

Assistant headteacher Mrs Terry said: “World Book Day is always a highlight of the school year. It’s wonderful to see the children so excited about books and stories.
“Our aim is to help every child discover that reading can be something they truly enjoy, not just at school but for the rest of their lives.”
According to the team at Manor Court School, the day proved to be a ‘memorable celebration of reading, imagination and creativity for the whole school community’.
