Father Christmas swapped his sleigh for a different kind of ride as he travelled in style for his festive rounds in the South West.
Crews from RNAS Yeovilton helped Santa arrive by air at various schools across Somerset and Dorset on Tuesday, December 9.
He travelled on Wildcat and Commando Merlin Mk4 helicopters operated by 1 Army Air Corps and the Commando Helicopter Force as part of Operation Santa’s Sleigh.
Despite strong winds and rain, a total of 30 local schools were visited, collecting letters to Santa from children and delivering festive cheer.
Three schools were treated to a special fly-past, while others welcomed Santa on the ground.
Countess Gytha School in Queen Camel was among those visited.
Headteacher Dave Gordon said: "The children were delighted to watch Father Christmas touch down with the help of Yeovilton’s 846 Naval Air Squadron this year.
"We value our strong links with the local RNAS base and appreciate their support in providing special opportunities to our children in this way."
The operation was a whole-station effort, involving engineers, air crew, and supporting staff working behind the scenes to make the magical day possible.
The Commando Helicopter Force’s mobile air operations team also ensured each school site was safe for landing.
Cdr Sammy Haynes, commanding officer of 825 Naval Air Squadron, said: "Bringing Santa into local schools in a Wildcat helicopter not only allows 825 Naval Air Squadron to share some Christmas magic, but it also helps us maintain our strong links with our community.
"My team enjoy the challenge and teamwork of visiting lots of different schools, and the reward is seeing the excitement on the children’s faces."
The crews also made a special stop at Charlton Farm, a hospice for children and young people with life-limiting conditions.
RNAS Yeovilton said it was "delighted" to support Santa on his rounds, especially as it might help the base secure a place on the 'nice' list.
Father Christmas said: "I can always rely on RNAS Yeovilton to help me out.
"Although being very busy with their support to operations nationally and internationally, they are always willing to make some time for myself and the local children.
"It is a great experience to spend the day with them, spreading some Christmas cheer and being able to see so many happy faces."
