RESIDENTS in South Somerset have donated clothes to a charity helping homeless people.

After councillor Adam Dance's appeal to the public of Yeovil, bags of new socks and underpants were collected at the Yeovil Art Space, and in Crewkerne and South Petherton.

These items have now been handed over to Bridget Turner at the Gateway to help their clients who are homeless.

Cllr Dance, who is also the Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Yeovil, said: "What a great result with the public of Yeovil stepping up to support the homeless in our community.

“This is one small way we can make life slightly better for those without a home.

“I may not be able to find homes, but I can help the Gateway with the great job they do providing a drop-in service with medical care, hygiene services, and food."

Bridget Turner from the Gateway said: "We have two sessions a week when we welcome those who are homeless or without a fixed place to live into the Gateway.

“Normally there are around 20 to 30 people at each session where we provide food, medical services, recreation, music, and somewhere to wash and brush up.

“Providing fresh, new underwear helps our clients regain their dignity and of course aids with hygiene and comfort.

“So, I would like to thank all of those members of the public who have kindly donated socks and pants to Adam's call out for help."

For anyone who still wishes to donate new underwear and socks, both male and female, the Yeovil Art Space, Maybe Delilah in South Petherton, and Bilby's Cafe in Crewkerne will be accepting these until the end of April.
