COUNCILLORS in South Somerset are urging young people to be “involved in local and national government” and make sure they can vote in this year’s general election.

Adam Dance, South Petherton & Islemoor councillor and also Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate for Yeovil, said: “Without political engagement from people of all ages and all backgrounds both in Somerset and the country as a whole, the democracy on which we depend is more fragile.

“At a time of wide divisions in political policy and priorities, you need to hold politicians to account to ensure your concerns are being addressed, not their own.”

Tom Power, 22, is a Conservative County Councillor for Wincanton and Bruton.

Tom said: “Young people need to be interested and involved in local and national government.

“Caring about how your area is run makes a stronger community, whoever you are wherever you live. Your vote counts, and will help make a difference.”

What you need to vote

In order to vote you must:

• be on the electoral register; and

• have suitable photographic identification - such as a passport or driving licence;

• without these a Voter ID is required - and this takes time.
