FERNE Animal Sanctuary has taken in 20 ex-battery hens suffering from living in cramped conditions.
The chicken in the photograph looks close to death but workers at Ferne have been giving Hilda, as she has been named, a new home.
Jo Fox from Ferne said: "I went to collect the chickens and it was shocking to see so many in such poor condition. I'm amazed that Hilda is still alive and hope she'll live the rest of her life as a hen should."
According to staff, two hens have sadly died as a result of their previous living conditions, but Hilda is doing well and is proving to be quite a character.
