POLICE officers detected 31 “reckless, dangerous and selfish” drivers speeding on the A303 in South Somerset this morning (November 15).

Some drivers were clocked at up to 94mph, with several caught exceeding 80mph in around half an hour.

The officers were positioned on a bridge over a stretch of the road that has a 60mph speed limit and no barriers between the carriageways.

The road was also wet. A yellow weather warning for rain was in place in parts of South Somerset between midnight and 1pm.

A spokesperson for the Roads Policing Unit said: “Just white paint between them on road with a 60mph limit, yet we detected 31 speeding drivers in just 30 mins!

“Many in the 80s and some driving in excess of 90mph on a very, very wet A303 this morning. This is reckless, dangerous and selfish!”

The unit also used the hashtag #Fatal5, referring to the ‘fatal five’ actions people can do behind the wheel.

They are not wearing a seatbelt, using a phone, not paying attention, driving under the influence and speeding.
