CHARD rounded off its celebrations of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee on Sunday with live music and an indoor picnic at the leisure centre.

The event was originally planned to be held outside but it was moved into the Freedom Leisure centre because of the weather

Residents were invited to bring their own picnics to the event, which featured live music from the Tootin' Hoodlums and Chard Concert Brass.

After the event on Sunday, Chard Town Council said: “We brought our Jubilee celebrations to a close today and found ourselves pulling the street party indoors on account of less favourable weather.

“Thanks to Chard Leisure Centre for allowing us the space and to Tootin' Hoodlums and Chard Concert Brass for your performances.”

The leisure centre shared a picture of the Tootin' Hoodlums on social media with the caption: “Non-stop fun in Chard today!”.

Other Platinum Jubilee events in Chard included the lighting of a beacon on Thursday evening - with families encouraged to bring their homemade lanterns from an earlier free workshop event - a civic parade, and a variety concert at the Guildhall.

On Saturday, Freedom Leisure hosted free family activities such as archery, swimming, a bouncy castle, and a soft play area.

The £16 million leisure centre was opened in November by Commonwealth Games gold medalist Matthew Clay, a former member of Chard Swimming Club.
