UPDATE: The road has now re-opened.

A MAIN road in Somerset is closed after multi-vehicle crash.

The collision happened on the A303 between the Podimore roundabout and Ilchester.

The A303 westbound is closed due to the incident, which happened around 7.30am this morning (January 7).

According to Travel Somerset, there is slow traffic from A37 Podimore to A37 Ilchester, and National Highways said to 'expect delays'.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: "The A303 in Somerset is closed westbound between the A37 north/A372 at Podimore and the A37 south at Ilchester.

"There is also a lane two closure on the eastbound carriageway.

"Emergency services including Avon and Somerset Police are in attendance."

National Highways have suggested the following diversion route:

  • Leave the A303 at Sparkford and join the A359 southbound.
  • Follow the A359 southbound through Marston Magna to Yeovil and the roundabout with the A37 and take the 3rd exit onto the A37 northbound.
  • Follow the A37 back to the A303 at Ilchester and rejoin the A37 westbound to continue your journey.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police added: "The call came in at 7.20am reporting collisions on both carriageways of the A303 between Podimore and Cartgate.

"No injuries reported but the road is closed as a number of vehicles need to be recovered and to debris cleared.

"Highways may need to carry out repairs."
