THE pinnacle of ploughing will be on show at an event next month.

On Saturday, October 2, the Crewkerne Young Farmers Club will hold their 57th Annual Ploughing Match at the Hinton Park Estate, near Hinton St George, by kind permission of the Ruell family.

The match will see ploughers competing in classes ranging from vintage trailer ploughs dating from the early 1920s through to the modern machinery used today, along with a special class for horse ploughing, with competitors from as far afield as Cornwall encouraging their horses to plough 1/3rd of an acre.

There will also be seven feed classes, enabling local farmers and growers to compete, with entries open on the day.

"Members are hoping that a large number of spectators will attend the match, taking advantage of the free entry and car parking, licensed bar and refreshments as a safe open air place to meet old friends and colleagues," said a spokesperson.

"Young Farmers clubs across the country continue to act as ambassadors for agriculture and the movement is proud of the lead it gives the members, educating and training young people aged between 10 and 28 in rural, agricultural and life skills."

The event will be signposted from the A30, at Roundham.
