AT it's peak, the site was the workplace of some 860 people, a thriving workplace at the heart of Chard.

Those workers produced ready meals which went on to stock the shelves of supermarkets across the UK.

But at the end of last year, Oscar Mayer announced it was closing the Chard site, putting all of those jobs at risk.

Francois Legrain, chief executive of Oscar Mayer, said at the time: "We have held extensive discussions with employee representatives throughout the collective consultation process, during which we have explored their proposals to continue production at Chard.

"Regrettably, however, we have concluded that none will help make the economics of the Chard site work in such a challenging market."

And so it was, with the final closure of the site expected by September 2021.

Now, the question turns to what will happen to the almost-four hectare site in Furnham Road?

It has now been put up for sale with property agents Jones Land LaSalle.

The listing for the site details how it operates as a 'highly specialised, self-contained food production facility'.

It also details how from around 1960, the site operated as an abattoir, but has over decades been expanded and re-configured.

"This now comprises the detached production facility, split across four levels, with additional supporting outbuildings including a laboratory, gatehouse, canteen and offices," the listing reads.

"Externally, the site provides hard-surfaced and concrete turning areas, circulation roadways and extensive surface car park."

The site is available for purchase as a whole, or in part.

And though the purchase price is not listed, the cost to Chard will become evident in the coming years...
