CREWS from Somerset battled a thatched property fire in Devon last night (April 12).

Teams from Bampton Dulverton, Tiverton, South Molton, Cullompton, Middlemoor, Danes Castle, Barnstaple and Crediton were called the incident in Bampton at around 7.45pm.

Two high volume pumps from Wellington and an incident support unit from Martock, as well as an incident command unit from Wiveliscombe also attended.

The thatched roof of the property was "well alight" when crews arrived.

"Crews got to work with four breathing apparatus to begin a property salvage and four jets to tackle the fire," said a spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue.

"The roof of the premise was 100 per cent involved in fire resulting in a partial collapse of the roof meaning crews were fighting fire externally to prevent escalation.

"Crews were able to successfully salvage all contents prior to this.

"And by 1.30am, the incident had been scaled back to just three pumps."
