A COMMUNITY farm shop opened in Somerset at the end of last year - with sustainability in mind.

Moxon Architects helped to create the new farm shop for Artfarm, and finished the building in November 2020.

Durslade Farm Shop, on the site of Hauser & Wirth Somerset in Bruton, focuses on supporting local food and craft.

The new building has been created with sustainability in mind. There is passive ventilation and natural daylight so that energy used is minimal.

Low impact materials such as as timber and prefabricated panels were chosen for their lower embodied carbon footprint.

Moxon’s managing director Ben Addy said: “It’s been a pleasure to have been involved in this project, our sixth completed scheme for the client, and one where we have been able to showcase our shared enthusiasm of local sourcing and material provenance.

"This modest building performs a simple function in a straightforward and flexible manner, however the use of recycled materials combined with precision detailing and fabrication ensures a comfortable and relaxed fit with the beautifully restored buildings of Durslade Farm.”

Since opening in 2014, Durslade Farm, home to a unique collection of properties, Hauser & Wirth Somerset, Roth Bar & Grill and Durslade Farmhouse, has become a significant cultural institution. The farm shop is the latest addition to the site.
