FIREFIGHTERS tackled a fire in a Somerset home where the smoke alarm wasn't fitted with a working battery.

They were called to the incident in Steppes Crescent, Martock, at 1.35pm today (Thursday).

Fire engines from Martock and Yeovil were mobilised following a report of smoke coming from the kitchen and lounge of the property.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "The incident involved a fire in the ground floor kitchen of a two-storey domestic property involving a portable oil fired electric heater.

"Slight fire damage was caused to the heater and slight smoke damage to the ground floor.

"Fire crews used two breathing apparatus wearers, one hose reel jet and one safety jet to extinguish the fire.

"Smoke alarms were fitted in the property without a working battery. Fire crews fitted a working smoke alarm.

"Test your smoke alarms, its simple, easy and effective and can save your life."
