A CHRISTMAS tree festival is taking place in a Somerset church until December 24 to raise money for a new roof.

St Andrews & St Marys Church in Pitminster is raising money after the lead was stripped at the end of last year.

As the church was unable to run its annual nativity, Mrs Jayne Fallon (wife of the Rector of the Blackdown Benefice) came up with the idea of a Christmas Tree Festival.

Harry Yoxall, Parochial Church Council Secretary, said: "This year, of course, Covid has prevented us from putting on our Nativity Play but we wanted to do something to mark the Christmas season."

There are 32 trees on display, supplied by Higher Willand Farm in Churchstanton. There is a sheep tree (from the family of a local farmer), a wilding tree with biodegradable decorations and a police tree with flashing blue lights.

The festival runs from 2pm until 6pm until December 24.
