IT looks 'unassuming', but an Army and Navy travelling stationary box up for auction in Taunton next month contains a world of adventure and experiences.

The box, which has come from the descendants’ of the original owner, is in great condition and must demand attention, said Simon Rayner, valuer at Greenslade Taylor Hunt, which will auction the item as part of the firm's final antiques sale of the year.

It still has the ivorine Army & Navy ticket for Capt PD McCandlish (later a colonel), dated 1904.

There are some entries in the diary and letter book, which just adds to its appeal.

It has a pre-sale estimate of £300-£500.

Mr Rayner said: “When you open the lid of what is rather an unassuming box it is really quite stunning.”

The sale, which takes place on Thursday, December 3 at the Octagon Salerooms, in East Street, Taunton, promises a host of interesting items to satisfy even the most demanding connoisseur.

In the painting section a beautiful Pre-Raphaelite pastel is also expected to garner plenty of interest.

It also has a guide of £300-£500.

Would-be buyers can follow the auction live and bid online, book a telephone call and follow the lot they are interested in or alternatively leave a commission bid with the auctioneers with the top price they are prepared to pay for any item.

There will also be the opportunity for in person bidding by appointment, subject to the latest Covid regulations.
