HIGHWAYS teams are preparing to work on two major road projects in Taunton next week.

The work in the Station Road and Wellington Road area is being undertaken during half term to minimise disruption.

A new road gully is being constructed on the corner of Station Road/Belvedere Road, which suffers from persistent flooding.

A few temporary traffic management measures will be in place from Monday to Friday so the work can be completed - one lane on Station Road will be closed and Belvedere Road will also be closed.

Road closures will only be in place when the teams are making the improvements, between 9.30am and 3.30pm throughout the week.

The traffic control team is also upgrading the pedestrian facilities and signals on Wellington Road/Castle Street.

There will be some changes to signal priorities at the Castle Street junction, and a new left-hand filter signal will be installed to improve the capacity of the junction.

The signals will remain on most of the time during the work. They will be turned off when needed outside peak hours.

Cllr John Woodman, Somerset County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "These schemes occurring in Taunton over the pending half-term are minor in their nature but will have massive long-term benefits for traffic in the area.

"The new gully on Station Road and the improved signals at Castle Street are small but vital works, and it is great that our teams are using reduced half-term traffic to carry them out.

"However, the areas are still busy, so I’d encourage the public to plan ahead."
