CARNIVALS across Somerset may be cancelled, but the county’s towns are still keen to celebrate the parades.

Children an Ilminster have created a display for the town centre, recalling 2019’s fun and colour.

Claire Oaten is the headteacher at Greenfylde First School.

She said: “No carnival this year does not mean it will still not be celebrated at Greenfylde.

“As a school, Greenfylde has always supported promoting Carnival and this year although there will be no parades they still wanted to show their support.”

Last year, the school’s pupils took part in an umbrella parade.

Miss Oaten, added: “Carnival is such a huge part of our heritage as a community and so we didn’t forget about it this year children have created a display including their usual mini-floats that will be in the Ilminster Emporium window for the two Ilminster carnival weeks.

“We’re also holding a drawing design competition for our decorated umbrellas instead of making them this year as it is always amazing to see how creative our families can be.

“This is being sponsored and judged by the Ilminster Carnival Committee who show us such wonderful support year on year.”

The display is in the window of Ilminster Emporium.
