A SOUTH Somerset farm is celebrating after adding three top awards to its haul of 2020 prizes.

The 20 strong team at Coombe Farm Organic, near Crewkerne, won a trio of Great Taste 2020 awards this week.

The business scooped five Gold Taste of the West awards earlier this year.

Ben White, the farm's founder, said: “We set up Coombe Farm Organic nearly five years ago to make the most of our organic herd and our focus has been on creating tasty meat in a sustainable way.

"The team were ecstatic when we won five Gold Taste of the West Awards a few weeks ago and to now win three Great Taste Awards is testament to all our hard work and the incredible producers we support too.

"From our farmers to our in-house butchers, packing and customer service team, we’re proud our organic principles and hard work to create delicious food has been recognised.”

The Organic Shoulder of Lamb (on the bone) won a 2-star Great Taste award, which means judges dubbed it 'above and beyond delicious'.

Judges’ comments included that it was a “handsome cut of lamb with good colouring” and that the “good fat content permeates the meat making it tender and juicy with a delicious crunchy, salty exterior.”

The Organic Beef Steak Mince also won a 2-star Great Taste Award.

Judges’ added: “This has a really wonderful rich almost game-like flavour. We feel it would absolutely enrich any dish.

“Great depth of flavour with a real beefiness to it. This is the sort of mince you could make proper burgers from without adding much else.”

The Organic Free-Range Whole Chicken won a 1-star Great Taste Award, which means judges dubbed it 'a food that delivers fantastic flavour'.

The judges’ said: “A pretty little chicken on the platter with deep golden skin and moist appearance. The aroma lifting from the dish is wholesome and there is a buttery note to the leg meat.”

Last year, Coombe Farm Organic opened an on farm café. Due to current restrictions the café is closed.

However, customers that live nearby or are passing can use the click-and collect service by ordering online.

There is no minimum order and your order will be packed ready for collection in biodegradable wool packaging.

There were 12,777 entries into Great Taste this year and of those products, 205 have been awarded a 3-star, 1,294 received a 2-star and 3,818 were awarded a 1-star accolade.

The panel of judges this year included; sustainable food champion Melissa Hemsley, modern vegetarian cook and writer Anna Jones, celebrated Spanish chef José Pizarro, Kavi Thakrar from Dishoom, food writer and cook Xanthe Clay, and baker and author Martha Collison - as well as food buyers from Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason and Waitrose.
