A NEW service to provide medical welfare for the military community in Somerset has just been launched.

Defence Medical Welfare will offer practical and emotional support to veterans, as well as serving troops and their families.

The charity, which was set up in 1943, is available for the first time to the 50,000 current and former military personnel in Somerset

DMWS welfare officer for Somerset Justine Clayton says her role is to give "unlimited support" for those who need it, whether in hospital or at home following treatment.

She said: "The service was launched four weeks ago and has already been proven how much it is needed in our community.

"I am delighted with how much it has been welcome from across the county, from the local authorities to other military charities, the NHS and those who need to use the service.

"With so many serving and veterans in the county I am looking forward to supporting them through what can be a difficult time."
