FIREFIGHTERS rescued a man who had fallen into a river and was heard shouting for help.
The man was believed to have suffered a broken ankle.
Fire crews and an ambulance were sent to the incident in the River Cale, at The Batch, Wincanton, at around 8.30pm yesterday (Friday).
A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We received a call from ambulance control with reports of a person in a river at the above location calling for help.
Two fire appliances from Wincanton and Castle Cary, along with specialist rescue crews from Trowbridge and Chippenham were immediately mobilised by fire control.
On arrival the incident commander confirmed that one male was in the river with a suspected broken ankle.
"Crews quickly got to work with life jackets to assess the scene and stabilise the casualty.
"The casualty was eventually rescued and transported up the bank using a scoop stretcher and handed over to ambulance crews on scene."
