A NUMBER of events to mark Armed Forces Day were cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis.

But Martin Tier was determined to make sure serving forces personnel weren't forgotten.

To that end he organised a last minute military convoy as a show of support for the Armed Forces community, from serving troops to service families, veterans and cadets.

Mr Tier used his contacts to arrange the display of military vehicles in a procession from Taunton through West Somerset and Bridgwater.

The event was held yesterday (Sunday), despite Armed Forces Day being the previous day, as organisers felt the weather would be better.

Somerset West and Taunton Council flew flags over its offices in Taunton and Williton.

It also produced a series of short videos to be shared on its social media feeds in the lead up to and on Armed Forces Day.

Council chairman Cllr Hazel Prior-Sankey said: “The respect and appreciation shown by the local community goes a long way to sustaining the morale of the Armed Forces 'family', particularly 40 Commando Royal Marines and The Rifles who have a long association with Somerset West and Taunton."

A flag to honour the Armed Forces in Somerset was also raised over Somerset County Council's HQ at County Hall.

Police officers across the district stopped for a moment last week to offer a salute to the Armed Forces.
