THE Prime Minister will announce measures to be taken for the second phase of the coronavirus action plan later this week.

Giving the daily briefing from Downing Street today (Tuesday, May 5) Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said the UK would need to get used to a 'new normal' as the second phase was introduced.

Mr Raab said the Prime Minister Boris Johnson would be updating the country on the latest measures which could be taken to safeguard the economy while avoiding a second peak of the virus.

Mr Johnson is expected to address the nation on Sunday.

The Foreign Secretary said there had now been 29,427 deaths associated with coronavirus in the UK, which means the UK is the European country with the highest number of deaths from Covid-19, overtaking Italy.

"29,427 people have died and hearts go out to everyone who has lost a loved one," Mr Raab said.

"We have continued to see a flattening out of the peak of this virus but as the figures show it is not over yet."

Mr Raab said during the second phase people would have to adjust to a new normal and adapt the ways we 'work, travel, interact and go about our daily lives'.

He said the steps being taken would be guided by the scientific advice so that they are 'sure-footed and sustainable'.

Mr Raab also warned of a growing trend of cyber crime, with malicious criminals exploiting the crisis for their own nefarious ends.

He said organised and sophisticated online scammers were targeting organisations responding to the pandemic, and the UK and US were working together with potential target organisations to help them mitigate harm that could be brought against them.
