A GROUP of South Somerset pupils have been spreading cheer in a time of crisis with personal letters to vulnerable members of the community.

Children from Neroche Primary School, in Broadway, spent their final day in school before the lockdown writing cards and letters to be delivered to local care homes.

The batch of colourful creations included crepe-paper cards and illustrated notes, written by children in all year groups, to bring cheer to those who may be feeling isolated, with limited visits from friends and family.

The initiative was the brainchild of Neroche’s headteacher, Alison Collins, and assistant head Jess Millard.

“Pupils took a lot of care creating beautiful artwork, then wrote wonderful messages of support and friendship,” said Miss Millard.

Neroche governor and local priest Tim Gibson collected the pupils’ creations on the final day before the school closed.

He and his family delivered them to Horton Cross, Vaughan Lee House and Hazelwell Lodge, where there were warmly received by residents.

Staff at Vaughan Lee care home even took to social media to thank the school.

They said: “How emotional were we reading these beautifully made cards and poems.

“Many many thanks to all at Neroche Primary School for thinking of us.”

Revd Tim Gibson added: “This was a real community effort.

“It shows that some good will come from this current crisis, which brings us all together to focus on what really matters.

“I am so proud of Neroche’s pupils for throwing themselves into this task.”
