Somerset Premier
St Bernadettes Old Boys 5, Burnham-on-Sea 36

BURNHAM-ON-SEA’S 1st XV will secure the Somerset Premier title with victory away to Old Redcliffians 2nds this Saturday.

That is the result of the Stags recording their 20th win from 21 league games last Saturday, and closest challengers Nailsea & Backwell losing 28-24 at Oldfield Old Boys.

Ninth-placed St Bernadettes tried to disrupt the well-oiled Burnham machine by slowing the ball down, but the visitors were still too strong on the day.

They scored six tries on the day, courtesy of Will Hopkins, Richard Muskett, Scott Havercroft (2), Sam Lewis and Stefan Pierce on his 50th Stags appearance.

The remaining points came from the boot of the ever-reliable Tim Piper, as Burnham coasted home to another victory in a quite remarkable season.

Victory at Old Redcliffians, who are bottom of the table having only won two league games this campaign, would make the Stags champions and earn them promotion back to Western Counties level rugby.

Burnham-on-Sea 2nd XV, who lost 29-14 at Wells 2nds on Saturday, are without a fixture in Somerset 2 South this coming weekend.

They are due to return to action on Saturday, March 21, at home to Minehead Barbarians 2nds.
