A NUMBER of staff at Richard Huish College, Taunton, walked out on strike on Thursday.

The National Education Union (NEU) took the further day of action to demand more funding for their college.

They were on strike along with staff in 33 other sixth form colleges nationwide.

Robin Head, of the Somerset branch of the NEU, said: "In total 38 per cent of all sixth form colleges and 16-19 academies took action together.

"The NEU is in dispute with the Secretary of State and seeking improved pay, conditions and employment through better funding for 16-19 education.

"Many NEU members, including those from Richard Huish, attended a rally at Parliament Square in Westminster on the day, followed by a march to the Department for Education."

Mr Head added that there is currently an overall £700 million shortfall in funding for post-16 education, which the NEU wants to see addressed in the forthcoming Budget.

He said the situation had led to job cuts, larger classes and lower pay.
