Western Counties West
Wiveliscombe 8, Wellington 29

WIVELISCOMBE hosted Wellington on Saturday in this first ever league encounter between the two teams, and the match went with the formbook - the visitors coming from behind to win.

Wellington are sitting top of the table, while Wivey are finding their feet in the division after being promoted last season.

The hosts had the slope in their favour in the first half, and went ahead through scrum-half Hugh Kelly's try.

But Wellington responded with a penalty from Rob Hooper, who then made a 40-metre break to set up Liam Phillips for a try, which Hooper converted.

Dan Quick slotted a penalty for the home side, making it 10-8 to Wellington at half-time.

After the break, man of the match Phillips broke through to score his second try, and with Hooper converting it was 17-8.

Two late scores put the icing on the cake for the visitors; Ben Gamlin showed good pace to cross for a converted try, and Vinny Gordon burst through for the final points of the match.

The two teams will meet on another two occasions this season.

The annual Boxing Day game will be played at Wiveliscombe this year, and the return league match on March 28.
