THOUSANDS of people lined the streets of Burnham-on-Sea and watched in awe as the town was illuminated by colourful carts for the 73rd Highbridge and Burnham Carnival.

The club’s months of hard work paid off as Burnham was filled with impressive carts, colourful costumes and brilliant sound and lighting which were welcomed by cheers by thousands of spectators.

Fresh off their victory at Bridgwater Carnival, Gremlins CC secured the top spot with their spooky inspired cart titled Curse of The Kraken, which featured colourful costumes, huge illuminated street lanterns, moving balconies and impressive dance routines.

The carnival club’s amazing entry, Curse of the Kraken, saw them pick up a haul of awards including Best Entry in the Entire Procession, Best Feature Entry and Chairman’s Choice (Open).

It was also an impressive showing from Burnham’s Hillview CC secured second place in the juvenile feature category with their tropical inspired cart, IKO IKO.

The club also won the best local entry and were selected as the chairman’s choice locally.

The Marketeers CC also impressed crowds with their American gangster themed entry titled Bad Guys and picked up third place in for best feature and second place for best decorate vehicle.

The members on cart were decked out is sharp red suits and armed to the teeth with fake machines guns and wowed crowds with their dance moves.

Unfortunately the heavens opened around half way through the procession but visitors stood firm and braved the rain as more carnival carts proceeded through Burnham.

There were also a series of class wins for Those Magnificent Men by Hucky Duck CC (tableau cart open), Marina

Sydenham JCC who rode in on seahorse-back for the Sea Warriors entry (juvenile feature/tableux) and Wilfs CC’s Jungle Rock (groups masqueraders adult).

The Masqueraders CC’s ghoulish green entry The Silent Mary (Redemption of the Damned) sealed them the

second place spot in the Feature Cart Open class and third place in the best decorated towing vehicle.

And Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival’s comedy kings Newmarket CC once again walked away with first place

for their cheeky take on a day at the races.

Their entry, ‘Wacky Riders’, marked another comic feature cart win for the group.

Bradley Loveridge, chief marshal of Highbridge and Burnham Carnival said: “It was a very successful night with everything going to plan with minimum all problems.

“It has been a very successful year for us and we have really enjoyed this year’s carnival.

“I would like to say a big thank you to all of the carnival marshals for their hard work, to the clubs for putting on a great show and to our sponsors for making this an event to remember.”
