THE MP for Highbridge has praised The King Alfred School Academy after a record number of students started at their sixth form this year.

One hundred and three students started at the school's sixth form in September including six international students which is double the number of students who joined them last year.

Burnham and Highbridge MP James Heappey said the sixth form's success is a 'real vote of confidence' in the town and local economy.

Mr Heappey said: “I’m so pleased that The Priory Learning Trust’s decision to keep the Sixth Form at The King Alfred School Academy has paid off with such a strong intake this September and a huge expression of interest for next year.

“There are many routes to a successful career but studying for A Levels and other post-16 qualifications in a school setting is an important option and I’m thrilled that the future of that provision in Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge now looks secure.

"It’s a real vote of confidence in our town and the local economy.”

Figures from the Department of Education released this month show The King Alfred School is the most improved school in Somerset.

The academy is part of The Priory Learning Trust and is attracting students from schools in Weston-super-Mare including Priory Community School Academy, Worle Community School Academy, as well as Bridgwater.

Students attending the sixth form receive a bursary for travel as well as a free laptop for their studies.
