AS lights and action descend on Chard this weekend, the town's annual carnival is going to bring one colour in particular to the town centre - green.

The event's organisers have been striving to help Chard Carnival to be better for the environment, and have teamed up with a Fore Street pub.

Jason Baker, the chairman of Chard Carnival, said; "We are always looking at ways that we can become a more environmentally friendly event and we are always keen to work with local businesses and groups from the town to achieve this.

"We are really pleased to of been able to work with Steve, Graham and Sarah at The Phoenix Hotel to try and reduce the amount of single use plastic glasses that are used on Carnival night.

"We are pleased to say that all of the plastic glasses used by The Phoenix are now 100 per cent compostable."

Launching the compostable cup scheme with Phoenix this weekend, the carnival is hoping to roll it out across all pubs in the future.

Steve Jones, from the Phoenix, added: “We started using throw away plastic glasses for our late night licence.

"It became clear to us the disposal of thousands of pieces of plastic was wrong and actively looked for a viable alternative.

"Biodegradable glasses feel a lot better from an environment point of view, it’s only a small start but we have to begin somewhere.”
