WHEN I was invited to stay at Little Barwick House, I was intrigued...what is a restaurant and rooms? And why is it different from a hotel or a bed and breakfast?

Well, I soon realised that this was because the room themselves and the stylish restaurant are both unique and don’t deserve to be labelled as one.

When my partner and I arrived at Little Barwick House, we were greeted by a lovely lady who showed us to our room: the garden room in fact. This was beautiful.

The furniture was stylish, it was brightly coloured and gorgeously decorated and included everything you could possibly need. There was never a moment, during our stay, where we needed anything.

We were then told to venture into lounge area where we sat and enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea that included scones, shortbread and cake.

The scones were soft and warm – just what we needed after a long journey. The fire was on and created a lovely warm and cosy atmosphere, perfect to begin our relaxing night away.

After a quick refresh in our rooms and of course trying out the very comfy bed, we ventured to dinner.

We were seated in the lounge area again and provided with a gorgeous glass of 2016 New Zealand Dog Point Sauvignon white wine.

Canapes arrived soon after and with some olives, roasted nuts and battered fish with tartar sauce, we scanned the dinner menu.

Offering three-courses, we were spoiled for choice. I opted for a blue cheese souffle to start, while my partner chose scallops with crispy smoked pancetta.

Once our starters were ready, we were led into the dining room. Gorgeous artwork adorned the walls and the chairs, despite being stylish, were also very comfy (not something you would usually notice when sitting down for dinner)!

The starters were delicious. To accompany mine, I was given a glass of 2017 Australian D’Arrenburg Hermit Crab Viognier/Marsanne - a fruity yet spicy wine which was a perfect accompaniment to my souffle, which was light and fluffy.

My partner enjoyed a glass of French 2015 Sancerre “Les Boucauds” which went very well with the scallops that were seared to perfection.

For our main course, I chose pan-fried fillet of Cornish Hake with basil crushed new potatoes and Chardonnay Sauce which was accompanied by a Burgundy 2016 Puligny Montrachet le Cru “Les Clavillons”. The fish was wonderfully cooked, and the Chardonnay Sauce was so tasty.

The wine was lovely and slightly acidic, which went well with my creamy Chardonnay sauce.

My partner devoured a Saddle of Wild Roe Deer with braised red cabbage and rosti potato. He noted that the meat melted in your mouth and the beetroot puree accompanied the dish well.

The wine to accompany this dish was a red Burgundy 2012 Corton Rouget, Grand Cru, which was nutty and floral and complemented the deer well.

For desert, my partner enjoyed a selection of West Country Cheeses brought out on a platter for him to choose from – typically he wanted to try them all.

I devoured a pistachio and white chocolate daquoise with dark chocolate tart and passion fruit sorbet, which was absolutely delicious.

We were offered coffee and petit fours but could not manage it after such a delicious four course meal.

After a very comfy night sleep in The Garden Room, we went for breakfast around 9:30am. The dark and intimate dining room had been transformed into a light and airy breakfast room with a full-length window to enjoy the marvellous views.

We both enjoyed creamy scrambled eggs on toast, with juice, tea and coffee. Definitely what was needed after the four glasses of wine the night before!

This tranquil venue is the perfect place to stay if you are after a relaxing break and honestly, I would stay here every weekend if I could.

The staff couldn’t do enough for us, we were made to feel so welcome, the house itself is stunning and the food was incredible.
