TAUNTON had a strong turnout for a second protest opposing new Prime Minister Boris Johnson's controversial decision to prorogue parliament.

More than 50 protestors turned out up outside the Market House in Taunton yesterday evening (Monday, September 2) with emotive placards arguing that the Prime Minister was thwarting democracy by suspending parliament as the Brexit saga enters its most crucial stages yet.

There are less than two months to go until the October 31 deadline when Mr Johnson has promised the UK will leave the EU on that date, 'come hell or high water' with or without a deal.

However with opposition MPs and Tory rebels looking to push through legislation preventing a 'no-deal' exit there have been talks of another General Election being called.

The demonstration came after hundreds gathered in Taunton to protest the move at the weekend - and came on a day when crowds also gathered to protest in Bridgwater

Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate from Bridgwater and West Somerset, Benet Allen, spoke to the gathered protestors.

"The Brexit negotiations seem to be a game of chicken with neither side looking likely to back down," Cllr Allen said.

"If neither swerves the result will be a disaster."

Labour campaigner Oban Mackie, aged 14, also spoke saying: "I cannot believe we are at a point where we having to protest and battle for democracy.

"The will of the people is not for no-deal.

"The will of the people is not for a recession, for food or medicinal shortages and it is not the will of the people to prorogue parliament."

Elke Winzer, one of the organisers of Somerset Loves Europe campaign group, said: "We are very pleased with the turnout today we had at short notice on a working day, and I am pleased we had more than 200 people at the protest on Saturday.

"I have settled status but if Dominic Cummings gets his way, I will not have the right to remain in the country.

"Nobody voted for this proroguing of parliament, and I never thought we would have to be protesting for democracy itself."
