AUTHOR Alice Clover has decided to let rip about the inequality of society turning its nose up at women breaking wind.

Alice, who grew up in Milverton, has co-written a cheeky book that will cause a whiff of shock called Girls Love to Fart.

She was inspired to take to her keyboard to get to the bottom of why she feels it's deemed funny for boys and men to pass wind, while flatulence among girls and women is in many circles is poo-pooed.

Alice, who lived in Milverton until she was 23, said: "The subject of females farting remains a persistent taboo among both men and women.

"Girls are far more likely to be penalised and told that it's not ladylike or feminine to fart. However, for boys and men it has always been not just socially acceptable, but a totally normal excuse for a good giggle."

She added that 'dropping one' is a perfectly natural bodily function which no-one should be made to feel ashamed of or embarrassed by.

She decided to write the book because she feels the gap in children's literature regarding girls being allowed to celebrate their stinkiness and laugh about their bodily functions needed to be filled.

The book is based around a lighthearted poem and Alice describes it was a look at "the world of farting girls for farting girls to enjoy".

Alice, who focused on feminist authors and looked into gender studies, says she has always been passionate about women's rights and equality and decided to kick up a stink after having two daughters.

She said: "I have friends who have never farted in front of their long-term partners, but this is not the case the other way round.

"It is not girls and women who are wrong, but society in allowing us to dislike our bodies and what they do."
