CLIENTS at a Taunton hair salon are being encouraged to do their but to cut the use of plastic.

Rebecca Abrams, owner of Bliss & Co, in Station Road, has introduced a refill scheme to help save on plastic bottles - and help clients save money at the same time.

She reckons the initiative could prevent the use of 24 plastic bottles per client each year - if everyone on her books joined in, it could save a total of 12,000 bottles.

The 'reuse, recycle, reduce' scheme involves clients buying one each of 250ml plastic bottles of branded eco-friendly shampoo and conditioner for £5.

When that runs out, they return to Bliss and get a refill in the same bottle for £3.

Rebecca said: "I am trying to do my part as a business to reduce the amount of plastic used.

"Previously, people would buy a shampoo and a conditioner and come back in an buy another one when they ran out.

"Now, since Friday, they can buy them in a plastic bottle and come back in and have a refill.

"We've got around 500 clients. The average client buys a shampoo and a conditioner every month. If they all joined in, that would save 12,000 plastic bottles every year.

"There are about 100 hair salons in Taunton. If they all did the same, that would be an awful lot of plastic bottles saved.

"It's a big issue at the moment and people are really keen to do their bit to reduce plastic usage."

A number of clients have already pledged to support the initiative. Meanwhile, a supply of brushes made from recycled materials recently offered at the salon has almost sold out.
