THE owners of a countryside cafe said they have been left 'devastated' by a fire which destroyed the eatery.

Emergency service rushed to The Pines Cafe, in the Quantock Hills between Taunton and Bridgwater, at around 4.30am on Wednesday, August 21.

The popular cafe was 75 per cent damaged by fire before the crews were able to get the incident under control.

In a post on their Facebook page, a spokesperson for The Pines Cafe, said: "We are all devastated by the recent fire at The Pines countryside cafe.

"We would like to thank the Fire service, Police, the local community and our loyal customers for their assistance, help and offers of support at this difficult time.

"We are working with our partners to ascertain the cause of the fire and discussing our options with regard to clear up and re-building.

"Updates will be posted in due course. Thankyou."

Following the incident, the fire service announced it is working with the police on this investigation, as it is believed the fire was started deliberately.

Avon and Somerset Police has confirmed it is looking into the incident.

A spokesman said: "If anyone saw anything suspicious in the early hours of yesterday morning around the area, please get in touch by calling 101 and quote reference number 5219 192 130."

Hundreds of people have taken to social media to express their sadness over the loss of the popular cafe.

Many people said their thoughts were with the owners, and they hoped the cafe could be rebuilt.
