A FORMER police station will be turned into two houses as plans get the green light.

Avon and Somerset Police has been given planning permission to turn Williton Police Station, in Priest Street, into two homes.

Planning officers for Somerset West and Taunton Council said the change of use of the listed building would ensure a 'viable re-use' of the asset.

Jackie Lloyd, case officer, said: "The proposed internal alterations will not adversely affect the character, appearance or significance of the listed building as the floor plan will be retained and the loss of historic fabric will be limited.

"The removal of the external flue will enhance the appearance of the building.

"The change in use of the building is considered appropriate and will ensure a viable re-use of the heritage asset."

Planning permission for a similar proposal was granted in 2016, but as the force had not acted on it, so the plan had to be resubmitted as the three-year expiry date loomed.

The new plans would see the former police station converted into one three bedroom house and one two bedroom house.

It was announced in 2014 the police station was due to close and co-locate with Minehead Police Station, and the final service closed in Williton in March last year.
